An Example of a Wedding Speech
Hi folks, I'm Joseph's sister -- his favorite sister
as he often points out. It sounds great but you have
to understand -- I'm his ONLY sister. I'm not here
to split sibling hairs. Not on this incredibly
loving and wonderful occasion. Instead, I want to
say something right from the heart, and that is
this: Fiona, I want to welcome you officially into
the O'Malley family. I say officially because the
truth is, Joseph and Fiona have been together and in
love for a long time, and Fiona has, in fact, been
as much a part of our family as any other O'Malley.
I know my brother Pete feels exactly the same. We
ALL do. Pete, by the way, is tied with Joseph for
the honor of being my favorite brother. I love 'em
both and awful lot.
Joseph and Fiona started dating when they were
seniors at Central High School in Davenport. They're
both Hawkeyes, too, graduates of the University of
Iowa. Fiona is an accountant on the rise and Joseph
is in marketing. He's also a sports nut. Ask him
anything about football, baseball, basketball and
maybe even tiddly-winks. Ask him how many hot dogs
Babe Ruth devoured in spring training in 1932.
Joseph probably knows the answer.
He's a big Hawkeyes fan, of course. He also loves
Notre Dame. Call him up sometime when you know he's
out. You'll hear the end of his phone message. It
says "Go Irish!"
I live with my husband, David, out in Idaho. We love
it out there, but one sad fact of our new life is
that we're a long way from Iowa -- where a big part
of my heart remains always. Last November, Joseph
and Fiona came for a weekend visit. We took off for
the Oregon coast and had a great time. Typical of
the northwest, it rained all weekend long, but
having my co-favorite brother and my brand new
sister with us made the sun shine in my heart.
On that trip I happened to find a book in the place
where we were staying. It was all about the ocean
and I found it fascinating. Especially about a
phenomenon called "slack tide." That's when the
ocean changes its flow from one direction to
another. For a very short period, when this mammoth
change is taking place, the ocean waters grow very,
very calm and still. Then the new direction comes to
force and the ocean roars back to life. This event,
this "slack tide," is kind of like getting married.
A man and a woman change the direction of their
lives -- from individuals into a couple. Keeping
with that analogy, I want to wish Fiona and Joseph a
lot of calm and an ability to roll with waves, ride
out the storms, go with the flow…throughout the
inevitable give and take and love of a lifetime
together. I'm happy for both of you -- so very, very
happy. And, with much love, I wish you endless
happiness and a lifetime of peace, prosperity and
joy.
