Maid of Honor Speech Example

I think we could all agree that my sister Jinny is truly a beautiful bride. Look at her face and you can see that beauty for yourself. Well, as Jinny's big sister, I'm here to tell you that her beauty is NOT simply skin-deep. It goes right to her warm and lovely heart. When the subject is Jinny Barrientos, now Jinny Barrientos Aguillard, I consider myself an expert. And I've got a few things that I'd like to say about this lovely bride who is also my dear sister, a great person, and my best friend.

In our family, it's no secret that we didn't have the easiest childhood. Our mom was a single parent and she had to work hard to support us. Mom did a great job, that's for sure. But we three kids had to fend for ourselves a great deal of the time. I was the oldest. Our brother Neil was second. And Jinny was the baby of the family. As I said, mom was almost always out working -- so it was my job, as the oldest, to care for Jinny. I was eleven, Jinny was five, and I used to pick her up from kindergarten and together we'd walk home, a distance that was over a mile. On rainy days I'd carry her so she wouldn't get wet or sick. I'd cook her dinner every night and she loved my "specialties" which included such gourmet fare as Oodles of Noodles, mac and cheese and hot dogs. She never complained -- about dinner or about anything. Always had a smile on her face and a kind word for everyone. Sweetness personified. That was -- and IS -my sister Jinny.

Weekends were special. Again, mom was working so Jinny would be in my care. I loved her so much, and she was so adorable that I have to admit it: there were times when she was like a toy to me. I would dress her up in the most beautiful clothes I could find. And I'd treat her like a little fashion model, styling her hair and taking pictures of this beautiful little girl. I remember one time when I put an electric fan nearby to make her hair blow as if in the wind. It was a classic "modeling affect." I wish I had those pictures here now.

Years later, when Neil and I were almost all grown up, our mom met a wonderful man named Frank Phillips. They got married and finally Jinny had a dad. Frank wanted to do everything for this little girl. He even put her through college. Jinny is the only member of our family who's a college graduate, and I can't tell you how proud of her we all are.

Now, Jinny is all grown up -- as you can see. My sister, beautiful person, beautiful bride. And best of all, Jinny met and fell in love with a wonderful guy named Wade Aguillard. They're very special individuals, these two, and together they make an extraordinary couple. They love to cook, they enjoy working out, they love their two dogs, Buster and Roxy, and they just love to spend time together. In fact, it's truly a rarity that you will ever see them apart from each other.

One of the best things about our time together is that Jinny and my girls are now as close as Jinny and I are. She's wonderful with both of them, and they're in seventh heaven when they play with their beloved Aunt Jinny. I'm especially proud of the fact that Jinny is Madison's godmother. And it's wonderful to see that Wade has taken to our kids as well. He's a really good guy, my new brother-in-law, and we welcome him to the family with open arms and tender hearts.

Jinny, I want you to know this: I am so proud of you, and so proud to be your sister, that I could just burst with happiness. Today, on your wedding day, I wish you and Wade all the very best things that this life can offer. May you always be as happy as you are right now. And may you derive everything that you want out of life, including health and joy and full appreciation of all that you have -- because you have each other.

Jinny, I am serving notice that I intend to be there always, just like in the old days…to walk you home, to keep you safe and warm and dry, and to offer encouragement and support whenever you might need it, all life long. My love for you will never end. And even though you're a fully capable, outstanding woman of the world, my instinct will always be to care for you, to protect you, and to love you…like my best sister…and my best friend.
