Poems for Birthdays - An Example
Dear Dad,
My Dad, Fred Brown, what a guy,
His big birthday is here.
Dad at the mighty 8-0,
The meaning is perfectly clear.
This kid who came from Joliet,
Hung out with the local gang,
Those days at Zinky's Gas Station,
How his heart truly sang!
Worked for Pontiac at GM,
Still a GM man at heart.
Will only buy American cars,
Nothing else for him is smart.
Owned a furniture store,
Managed it with style and class.
Everyone in our area knew,
"Your ass sits better in a Cass."
Dad took me to Atlanta,
For the '72 All Star Game.
Still lives with hopes his Cubbies will win,
But they always turn up lame.
Mom and Dad took me traveling,
Trips to Europe, NY, DC.
In Washington, Dad loaded us in some guy's car,
Said "Give us a ride now, see?"
He taught me so many important things,
To work, to save, to invest.
How to stay in shape,
Dad put me to the test.
He's truly an amazing man,
With persistence born so clear.
Hasn't missed a Rotary meeting
In -- get this -- forty-four years!
He's a member of Calvary Baptist Church,
For fifty years in all.
Taught Sunday School for fourteen years,
For Dad, life is a ball.
He's been to ninety countries,
Has a hundred in his plan.
He's gonna make it, have no doubt,
My Dad is quite a man.
He loves Chicago truly,
The world's best town, by far.
Thinks "Seinfeld" is hysterical,
That Jerry is quite a star.
Lives in Florida now, fifty years,
But Chicago is still the best.
Won't compare it to other cities,
'Cause it's better than the rest.
Every Christmas that silly reindeer,
Adorns our table so great.
He got it from his Aunt Florence,
It must be, what
seventy-eight?
Loved our dear old dog,
Spotty was really great.
Still tells stories about him,
That pooch was just first rate.
Rides a bike fifteen miles a day,
How incredible is that?
Walks and swims and sings in the choir,
He's got that fitness thing down pat.
Happy birthday, dearest Dad,
You're like the sun and stars above.
With thanks on your big birthday,
And a heart that's full of love.
Love,
Fred and Susan
