Christmas Poem for Dad - An Example

Dear Dad,

Oh my God, go figure,
The greatest man alive.
And now at Christmastime
My Dad’s turning 75!

Age is just a number,
On the ladder, another rung.
The fact about my Dad,
Is this: He’s eternally young.

He grew up by the Michigan Lakes,
Would always hunt and fish.
Entered the Air Force at 17,
A patriot fulfilling his wish.

Served in Korea and Vietnam,
Our greatest source of pride.
To love him is just natural,
Emotion one cannot hide.

One of my earliest memories,
Is standing on Dad’s feet,
While we were hanging ornaments
It always was so neat.

Our Girl Scouts Father/Daughter dance
Was truly a highlight.
His signature dance with that final “Ugh” flair,
Was, like the sun, so bright.

He square danced like a pro,
At every single bash.
Looked like Kenny Rogers,
Dressed like Johnny Cash.

Whenever Dad flew home,
Off those Air Force planes he’d glide.
My gosh, the love and pride I felt,
Sweet joys I couldn’t hide.

When I graduated high school in Japan,
I set off for Kentucky alone.
But Dad took care of all,
Every friend and relative he’d phone.

They all took care of me,
Swept up in Dad’s cocoon.
Enveloped by all his love,
A feeling that would make me swoon.

I made him a grandpa a million times,
For kittens and puppies, mine.
When I made him a grandpa for real,
His reaction was truly fine.

The look on his face I’ll never forget,
I wish you all could see.
And best of all, the truth:
What a grandpa he would be!

His dedication to family and friends,
His helpfulness to all.
His go carts and basement swings for us,
He made our life a ball.

Though his theme song is “Itty Bitty,”
His stature is big as can be.
If you need it clear as crystal:
My Dad means the world to me.

So Dad, on this Christmas birthday,
My thanks are large as the skies above.
I wish you joy and health and peace,
And forever...all my love.

Love,

Terri
