A Toast to Parents

Dear Mom,

Little girls so often dream
Of the day they’ll say “I do”
But seldom do they consider
Seeing their mother’s dreams come true.

So while it’s always special
To witness two hearts unite
This particular union
Is – to me – especially right.

It began with a chance encounter
Over a casual meal
From that table love did blossom
Into something meaningful and real.

Ken, then living in Delaware
Simply came to visit his brother
But later, smart man that he is,
Came back to see you, Mother!

And what I’ve seen since that time
Truly warms my soul
You’re the happiest I’ve ever seen you
And so completely whole.

Not that something was amiss
Before Ken asked you to be his wife
It’s just that you’re one hundred ten percent
Since he came into your life.

Like a puzzle with many pieces
Or an afghan perfectly knit
The two of you together
Are a delightfully perfect fit.

Mom, so warm and loving
Others always your top concern
Ken, so patient and kind
Supportive at every turn.

I love the way you love each other
And make one another laugh
The way you smile and both hold hands
It’s clear you’ve found your other half.

And watching you both with the grandkids
It’s a toss up to try and decide
Whether Ken, the groom, is the biggest kid
Or Mom-mom, his lovely bride?

Everyone knows Ken likes to fish
And today is no exception
He’s landed his best catch ever,
Thus the cause for this reception.

Ken is likewise a stellar catch
He cooks, he cleans, it’s true
But my favorite thing about dear Ken
Is the way that he loves you.

He brings you flowers often
And treats you like a queen
Consequently you’re more radiant
Than I’ve ever seen.

Ken, you became a family member
Long before today
I think everyone would agree with me
That we’d have it no other way.

So what a thrill it is for me now
To make this wish for both of you –
May you share a lifetime of happiness
As the rest of your dreams come true!
