Birthday Poems and Poetry

You are my heart, and you are my soul
And because of you, everything’s clear
So I thought I’d recount just how special you are
To help mark this auspicious year.

As the years collect, and time meanders
And life’s quality ages like wine
I play back both our lives like home movies
Back to High School and Valentine’s.

When we were so young and life was ahead;
God knows we were just barely ready
Still our love is as pure as it was way back then
On the day we were first going steady.

These days there are very few couples
That date back to eleventh grade
That can say that they split a jalopy
Half and half, with the money they’d made.

Etched fine into both of our memories
Beneath a tree, on a day quite sublime
We knew in our hearts that our love was forever
And as true as the church bell’s chime.

We invested in love quite early in life
Brought together by cupid and fate
Our hard work and business savvy paid off
Both eighteen, buying Real estate.

Though our marriage was almost a short one;
I’d never seen a worse driver than you
In Atlanta, twice, nearly killing us both,
But we’ve survived to see year 32…

When the kids came along, you showed your best side
More devotion, a man’s never had
And the kids will attest to what I’ve always known:
That you’re such an incredible Dad.

The example you’ve shown, from the time they were small,
Always coaching and watching their games
Has proved a success when you look at them now
From the fatherhood hall of fame.

When a grandbaby girl came to bless both our lives
You were there for Michele, that was certain
You could hear every sound of a future so bright
A new life just behind the curtain.

Now a two year old girl calls you Grandpa
Who will love you as she’s growing older
She can see in your eyes that she’s captured your heart
Taking time just to talk and to hold her.

You’re the rock of our fabulous kinship
A “Man’s man” who provides as he should
Always striving and reaching and going
Extra miles to make everything good.

Thanks to you, we’re a closely knit family
Like you’d hear in a fine country song
All our lives have been filled with your values instilled
And with that we can never go wrong.

It’s the simplest things that are precious:
Tuesday nights with “American Idol”
Just as long as your family’s together
Seeing who’ll take the “Nashville Star” title.

You so value our friends and relations
Helping others whenever they’re down
If it’s golf or it’s Wednesday night bowling
Just a great guy to be around.

There’s so much about you I admire
Still so handsome, still working so hard
I’m not sure, but you’ve probably caught me
“Checking you out” while you work in the yard.

When I kidnapped you straight from the ball field
And then whisked you off south to Savannah
You hadn’t a clue just what I’d planned to do
As we flew to Saint Louis from Atlanta.

But like the journey our lives have long taken
With surprises; without hesitation
As I rewind the tape, it occurs that it’s been
Like a non-stop Hawaiian vacation.

And this year we will chart the occasion
Just the two of us roaming the sea
Led by stars we’ll continue our voyage
Toward new horizons for both you and me.

And so “Happy Birthday Robert Freidman”
Here’s to memories brought forth in rhyme
May the years up ahead lead the two of us
Side by side, still sharing time
