An Anniversary Speech - True-Life Example

I want to thank you all for joining us here today to celebrate the 50th wedding anniversary of Jessica O'Connor, aka Mom, to Lorenzo David Brizio, otherwise known as Dad.

It's incredible to consider, but it's half a century since this lovely, blonde haired, blue-eyed, fair skinned Irish-German damsel was courted, wooed and ultimately won by her handsome and swarthy Sicilian suitor.

You know, we Brizios have always thought it was kind of funny to note how on Mom's side of the family, there were lots of folks who found their way into careers in law enforcement. And on Dad's side of the family, well, NOBODY was in law enforcement.

They met on a blind date. The year was 1953 and the place was an American Legion Post. It was a dance. Dad was swept away by Mom's beauty. And Mom was truly impressed by Dad's 1940 Nash. As I understand it, that was one HOT car.

They got married in Queens, on April 3, 1956. It was Dad's job to pick up the wedding cake at a Brooklyn bakery. He drove really slow because it was snowing on that early April day, and besides, he didn't want to ruin the cake. Dad was excited, and on top of the world during that interminable drive to Queens. But all the drivers who got stuck behind him weren't as happy. He saw more fingers that morning than a busy manicurist sees in a week.

Believing strongly in the symbolism of symmetry, Mom and Dad, whom, as I said, were married on April 3, 1956, celebrated their first anniversary by heralding the arrival, a year to the day, of their first child, daughter Nicole Ann Brizio. She was -- and is -- my big sister. I was the next family member to arrive, Frank Brizio, and I was born on April 6, 1959. Third was sister Marie Brizio, on March 7, 1962. And finally, everybody's little sister, Dina Brizio, who was born on November 6, 1964. Mom and Dad were prolific, yes. And the lesson was NOT lost on the Brizio children. Between the four of us, we've got seven wonderful kids of our own -- and that means seven fantastic grandchildren for Mom and Dad.

Mom and Dad both love to cook -- just not at the same time, or at least, not in the same kitchen. Dad loves a nice Manhattan -- with, before or after his meal. Or, on occasion, all of the above. Mom's drink is a classic martini, the silver bullet. And if she has enough of them, just listen carefully and you'll hear how that old Brooklyn accent comes bubbling right up to the surface. Gin is an amazing thing!

Our folks are God-loving, church-going people. And along with religion, they also have great faith in the Phoenix Suns. In fact, they've been season ticket holders since the Suns first came to town in 1968. They love baseball, too, and they're big Diamondback fans. They really support the ones they love. They always have. And nobody knows that better than their children and their grandchildren.

To Jessica and Lorenzo, Mom and Dad, two of the greatest people who happen to be our parents, and grandparents, our thanks to you for all that you've done, and our deepest, dearest love for all that you are. May you have another fifty years together, with great joy, great health, great peace and great satisfaction. You simply and truly deserve nothing less.

Love

Frank
