A Birthday Poem Example

Dad,

It only seems like yesterday
I was sitting on your lap
Biting at your dozing nose
While you tried to take a nap.

Evening trips to ice cream shops
Were something we would do
It would always be a special time
Shared just by me and you.

When I would need a piggyback
You’d always be my ride
And you would be my guardian
When Mom tried to tan my hide.

You listened to my problems
And gave me sage advice
Boy, when you caught me smoking
Well it sure made me think twice!

You were such a good provider
Of everything I'd need
And encouraged me in every way
Helping me succeed.

Remember that one Christmas
You made me squeal with glee?
When you handed me the set of keys
To that '81 Grand Prix!

You were always there for me
Like when I had Annette
You brought a meal of pig tails
The doctor wouldn't soon forget!

And even in the hardest times
When Mom had passed away
I could always count on you
Like I count on you today.

When I might need a pool installed
Or help with Annette and Neal
You were there to lend a hand
Or to cook an awesome meal.

Whenever I was feeling down
And needed a big smile
You would be the one I'd choose
To keep me laughing for a while.

You've got a sense of humor,
Part sarcastic and part witty,
That always keeps me well-amused
On the way to Atlantic City.

And both my kids think their Papaw
Has a lot of funny quips:
Neal, who is your “partner” now
And Annette will drive you to the strip.

And when I see them laugh with you
Their eyes and hearts with glee
It takes me back to my simple days
Of sitting on your knee.

And here I am to celebrate
You reaching ninety years
With the greatest of well-wishes
And the cheeriest of cheers.

So let's sit and reminisce
On all the joys we've had
And let me start it off with this:
Happy Birthday my dear Dad!

Love,

Shelly
