65th Birthday Poem
Dear George
Oh, my goodness, it's great to be alive
Who could think George is (wow) sixty-five!
Of all the occasions that might be great
The very best of all is on November eight.
George Y. Birdsong
We hold you close, so dear
On this big day we're thrilled to say
It couldn't be more perfectly clear.
You've meant the world to all of us
From Yancey, your whole family, and a mix
Of the most delightful grandchildren
A sweet brood that numbers six.
Oh George, it's been a joyful ride
Just getting to this big day
And best of all, there's so much more
To celebrate along the way.
It starts with lots of love from me
Your childhood sweetheart and fortunate wife
Forty-three years of bliss together
Adds up to a wonderful life.
From our early days in Charlottesville
And adventures in law school
To Suffolk, the young lawyer went
Under Governor Godwin's rule.
Then Uncle Harvard called
From the family peanut biz
Said, "Boy, we need you NOW!"
And in the business, he's a whiz!
George and I and lots of love
True happiness was found.
Children soon were on the way
Light of life--it came around.
Anne Cabell was first, then David and Charles
The children did come along
They made a family of true love
The family of George Birdsong.
Now all these children are married
To Richard, Davin and Brooke
With kids of their own, the love keeps growing
And who's here now? Just look!
George celebrates this big birthday
But he's far from all alone
To share the joy--and bring more love
Six grandchildren he calls his own.
For Granddaddy and Mama Sue
There's always a big thrill
With Carrington, Benton, Cross and Penn
Plus Carson and our Will.
And best of all for George and me
What really makes our day
Is all these children and grand kids
Live within two blocks away!
So Granddaddy plays his tennis and golf
And zooms on his cool Jet Ski
And best of all for the man called "The Greatest,"
Is staying close to his loving family.
He's bought us all a new pontoon boat
To enjoy on the lake and have fun.
It will be great for parties and rides
To be enjoyed by everyone.
'Coure not everybody's perfect
And George--that's just the truth.
We can't forget that episode
Of Anne Cabell and her little lost tooth!
Remember, dear, the dollar bill
I put beneath her pillow?
Then you priced a Slurpee on the phone...
It's just your peccadillo.
Poor Anne Cabell, her streak ran out.
And she was out of luck
'Cause a Slurpee costs just thirty-seven cents
And that's less than a buck.
But George, though not quite flawless
Is kind and our great star.
Ask William Welch how kind he is
George loves you for whom you are.
He's a pillar of our community
A member of all the boards.
He loves Main Street Church
And is a man of great accord.
He's a wonderful son to Yancey
Her youngest son of three.
There's Bill and Cabell and George---
But George is the BEST --just ask me!
Most of all he's a husband sweet
A father of boundless love.
He always has time for everyone
Truly a gift from above.
So Husband, Dad, and Grand daddy great
On this day of fancy fest.
We wish you sixty-five more years
With love-- 'cause you're the best!
A toast to the love of my life, my best friend, the
father of our children, and the man who is my
happiness and who truly is THE GREATEST!
CHEERS!
Love,
Sue
