50th Anniversary Toast Parents

From Sylvia and Michelle, for the 50th wedding anniversary of their parents, Bernie and Helen.

It's hard to believe it, but 50 years ago today, on August 19th, 1956, our mom and dad walked down the aisle and became man and wife. Time flies, yes. But this is half a century of living and loving together -- and to us it's incredible…and incredibly moving.

We're just thrilled that so much family is here to celebrate with us. Brothers and sisters of the bride and groom, cousins, nephews, nieces, in-laws, SEVEN grandchildren and a world of dear friends. Thank you all for being here. Your presence makes this special day even more special.

What can we say about our wonderful parents? Well, after 50 years, there's plenty, so we'll try to streamline it and give you the life of Helen and Bernie in a nutshell.

Mom, born in Portland, Maine, played clarinet -- with the high school marching band -- and piano, studied at Boston University, worked at John Hancock, met the love of her life and married him.

Dad, the oldest of 6 kids, was raised on a New Hampshire farm. He loved riding tractors and haying. Went to Babson College and Northeastern where he majored in accounting. Met mom, fell in love, got married -- and then took off to fight the Korean war.

Life for mom and dad has been just great. When they were young , they loved square dancing and bowling. Had two little girls and raised a family. Dad was the controller of a big Portland engineering firm. Mom stayed home with us kids. She taught us how to sew and knit. She also taught us how to bake and believe me, she's an authority. Her pies, especially blueberry, apple and pumpkin, are the best. And her crust is to die for! Her green thumb makes her a wonder in the garden and she's a sports nut, too, loving, at times, the Boston Celtics, ice hockey and any sports team from Maine.

Meanwhile, dad has been a Mason, a Rotarian and a bowling fanatic. He still bowls -- and he plays a mean round of golf with his sons-in-law and his grandsons. In retirement he's as hale as ever. On a typical day you can find dad chopping wood, fishing, gardening, picking apples or berries and restoring his favorite blueberry mountain.

Mom has always been compassionate, honest, loving and loyal. And dad is gentle, respected, easy-going, supportive, funny and yes, filled with love. In short, they've just been the perfect parents and we are indeed extraordinarily grateful for all their gifts and all their love. Mom…dad…just know that your love is reciprocated -- from hearts that are full. And while we note that your half a century together has been a lot of joy, love and satisfaction, all we wish for you is more of the same. In fact, fifty years more would be nice. And you richly deserve it. Mom, dad, Helen and Bernie…on your anniversary day…and every day…you are just the best. We love you dearly and forever.
Happy 50th Anniversary!

Love,

Sylvia and Michelle
